One Injured when 18-Wheeler Hits Overpass on Southern State Parkway in Lakeview, NY
Lakeview, NY — December 14, 2022, one person was injured by debris when a tractor-trailer crashed into an overpass on Southern State Parkway in Lakeview.
Authorities say the incident happened around 3:50 a.m. on the Southern State Parkway--a road semi-trucks are not permitted to travel--near the Eagle Avenue exit. Preliminary investigation suggests a big rig was traveling along the roadway when it passed beneath an overpass with insufficient clearance. The truck's trailer became wedged beneath the bridge and debris from the crash critically injured another motorist traveling behind the truck.
According to reports the truck driver then unhooked the semi-truck from the trailer and drove away from the scene.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
Commentary on Lakeview Truck Accident on Southern State Pkwy
Reports say the truck driver just unhooked his truck from the wrecked trailer and booked it out of there. Hopefully police can track the trailer he left behind to its source, find out who picked it up, and track down the driver. Clearly they have some consequences coming for their series of poor choices and the injuries they caused to the other motorist.
However, there may be more to this than just catching and punishing a reckless trucker. It's also important to look into who put him on the road. I also can't help but wonder what kind of business would trust a truck to someone willing to make so many bad choices in a row. Maybe they couldn't have seen this coming, but over the years I've run into far too many trucking companies that hired virtually anyone who could fog a mirror--regardless of red flags. Questionable practices or not, though, the law says a company whose employees hurts someone is also responsible for that damage.

Obviously before any of that can be addressed the driver must be found. Hopefully that's just a matter of time, and once they have a suspect in custody further steps can be taken to help the innocent person who was injured in the wreck. If police stay diligent and the public cooperates with any helpful information, I'm confident justice will be done.
