Commentary on Isaac Valerio Melendez Car Accident in Dallas

With a situation like this, one of my key concerns is people potentially jumping to conclusions. Even authorities can fall into the trap of thinking "Well, the most likely explanation is the driver did something wrong, so that's probably what happened here." That may be true, but it can lead less experienced investigators to jump to conclusions without considering other possibilities. That's why I take the time to remind people that we simply can't say what happened here without seeing the evidence for ourselves. Independent investigations could show this is one of those uncommon situations the driver couldn't avoid. Remembering that is a prudent first step toward ensuring people get the help they deserve.
