Teen Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Lee Boulevard in Lehigh Acres, FL

Lehigh Acres, FL -- December 10, 2022, a teenager was killed after an accident where a tractor-trailer and their vehicle crashed on Lee Blvd.

Initial details said that the accident happened at around 7:50 a.m. along Lee Boulevard at Sunniland Boulevard.

It appears that a 19-year-old man was in a car traveling westbound along Lee Boulevard. From oncoming lanes, authorities believe that an eastbound tractor-trailer made a left turn. The two vehicles then collided.

The 19-year-old sustained fatal injuries due to the crash. Police said that the victim may have been traveling at high speeds leading up to the crash. No further information has been released.

I just want to be clear up front that I can't say more about what did or didn't happen here without seeing further independent investigations. But when I read these details, I can't help wondering if authorities are really getting this young man's loved ones the answers they deserve. They appear to believe the victim had been driving fast leading up to the collision, but they don't pay much attention to the fact a tractor-trailer turned in front of oncoming traffic. Why is that?

The most up to date images of this crossing I can find appear to show that the tractor-trailer would have to yield to oncoming traffic to make a left turn. So why didn't it do so here? Was the victim truly driving so fast that a reasonably prudent driver couldn't anticipate how fast they were approaching? Or, would a more reasonably prudent professional have been able to wait for the victim to safely pass?

This is one of the reasons thorough independent investigations are so important. I've seen situations like this where authorities were simply withholding details until they knew more. Other times, it turned out authorities jumped to conclusions, missed important details, or even let their opinions be swayed by trucking company representatives that arrived on scene to get their story straight.

Could it be something like that is tipping the scales here? If for no other reason than to ensure the victim's loved ones get clear answers about what led to such a terrible tragedy, there should be more thorough independent investigations here into how all of this could have been avoided.
