Commentary on Shane Kuykendall Accident in Tom Green County
Police mentioned speed and possibly alcohol as factors here, but before anyone takes that as the final word on the matter it's important to remember that preliminary reports aren't ironclad. Is their explanation of events possible? Yes, and if so then there might be other issues to investigate--like whether a local alcohol vendor is partly responsible for the victim's injuries. However, unless clear evidence confirms alcohol was a contributing factor then it can't be taken for granted.
There's a lot of reasons that pickup might have run off the road: Wet pavement, vehicle malfunctions or defects, medical emergencies, poor road design, low visibility at night...some possibilities may be more common than others, but none of them can be safely ignored if the truth is to be learned. I've seen more than enough victims unfairly blamed for crashes that were actually out of their hands; I certainly don't want to see any more. Will police take the needed steps to get the whole story here, or should someone else fill in the blanks they often leave behind?
