Rigoberto Eduardo Fernandez Killed, 1 Injured in Truck Accident in Midland County, TX

Midland County, TX -- December 6, 2022, Rigoberto Eduardo Fernandez was killed and one person was injured after a semi-truck accident.

Officials said that the incident took place at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 1050 and FM 307.

Initial details suggested that 47-year-old Rigoberto Eduardo Fernandez of Florida was traveling through the intersection when police believe he failed to yield due to distracted driving. This resulted in a collision with another commercial truck.

Fernandez sustained fatal injuries due to the crash. The other driver, unidentified, sustained injuries. Right now, additional details are unavailable.

When police say someone was distracted as they do here, it's obviously important to take that seriously. That said, experience taught me to also take such claims with a grain of salt. This soon after a deadly wreck, the details can be very scattered, and authorities may not have the right tools or experience to consider other possibilities. That's especially true with commercial truck wrecks, and this incident involves two.

I can't begin to count how many times authorities blamed a crash on something like speeding, distraction, or alcohol only for more thorough independent investigations to show they were just speculating because those are common factors. If steps aren't taken to let the evidence speak for itself, it only makes it more difficult for victims and families to get the help they need. That's why I can't help wondering if the right people are looking into this tragic event.
