Oliver Shaw, Lucas Wegener Killed in 11-Vehicle Crash on North Fwy in Montgomery County, TX

UPDATE (December 8, 2022): Authorities have identified the motorcyclist killed in this accident as 27-year-old Oliver Shaw. The driver hit by a car on the freeway was also identified as 23-year-old Lucas Wegener.

Montgomery County, TX — December 6, 2022, two people died and injuries were reported in an 11-vehicle accident on the North Freeway in Montgomery County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 11:00 p.m. in the area of the North Freeway (I-45) and State Highway 242. Preliminary investigation suggests a DPS trooper was conducting a traffic stop on I-45 near Research Boulevard when a motorcyclist sped past him and then exited onto the northbound feeder road. Just ahead of the rider a Lexus pulled out of a Metro Park Center lot; the bike then crashed into the front-left side of the car. The rider was ejected into a ditch and suffered fatal injuries.

After the collision the bike continued without the rider, re-entered the freeway, and hit several cars. Two vehicles reportedly stopped near the motorcycle as an attempted traffic control measure; one driver then got out and moments later was fatally hit by another vehicle.

The investigation continues. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on 11-Vehicle Accident in Montgomery County

Altogether this accident seems to have a lot of moving parts and complications. It's one thing to figure out who or what's to blame after a two-vehicle fender-bender, but it's another thing entirely to organize the chaos of a fatal 11-vehicle highway crash. That's where I get concerned: The more complicated a wreck is, the more likely it is that overwhelmed police investigators will miss or misinterpret crucial details.

That's not meant as a slight against law enforcement's hard-working and dedicated officers, just acknowledging that they don't always have the time, training, tools, or patience to carefully connect all the dots of the accident.

If police reports end up incomplete or they reach mistaken conclusions, that can make a lot of problems for victims and families down the road as they seek answers and help. That's why I often suggest independent investigations from experienced professionals. Those account for all of the possible factors involved in the accident and can ensure even the subtlest details are brought to light. It's rarely simple to learn the whole story of an accident, but with the right tools and experience it's far from impossible.
