David Hernandez Killed in Crash with 18-Wheeler on Prosperity Ave in Merrifield, VA

Merrifield, VA — December 6, 2022, 19-year-old David Mendez Hernandez died in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Prosperity Avenue in Merrifield.

Authorities say the incident happened around 7:00 p.m. on the 2900 block of Prosperity Ave. Preliminary investigation suggests an 18-wheeler was turning left onto the southbound roadway when Hernandez' Nissan 350Z collided with it. Police alleged the Nissan might have been traveling at high speeds at the time.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation continues. No further information is available at this time.

Investigators mentioned the victim might have been speeding and lost control, but somehow failed to emphasize that a big rig drove into his path. If the news got that part right, it sounds like the truck driver failed to yield the right-of-way--and yet reports gloss over that while seemingly blaming the victim.

Am I saying he couldn't have been speeding? Of course not. I wasn't there and I don't have more information than reports can provide. I'm just troubled to see the news diverting attention one direction and seemingly ignoring another major factor in the tragic crash that ended a young man's life. It's omissions and problematic reports like this which lead me to recommend independent investigations rather than waiting for police to sort things out. Will the necessary steps be taken here to get real answers for a grieving family?
