Ma De La Luz Villarreal, Child Killed, Alma Ramos, Guadalupe Montoya, Gerardo Montoya Injured in Car Accident in Lamb County, TX

Lamb County, TX -- November 24, 2022, Ma De La Luz Villarreal and a child were killed and others were injured in a car accident.

Officials said they responded to the crash scene at around 7:25 p.m. It happened along US Highway 385 about 8 miles south of Springlake.

Initial details said that the incident happened after a pickup lost control on the highway and crashed into an SUV. Due to the collision, 55-year-old Ma De La Luz Villarreal and an 8-year-old from the pickup sustained fatal injuries. Others hurt in the crash were identified as 50-year-old Alma Ramos, 45-year-old Guadalupe Montoya and 46-year-old Gerardo Montoya, and a 5-year-old child.

Authorities said there was some winter weather in the area at the time of the crash. They have yet to report a specific cause for the accident.

Considering the sheer devastation surrounding this awful event, it isn't entirely surprising that authorities haven't concluded anything publicly yet. A deadly crash can be complex enough without so many people being involved. My concern, though, is people may be quick to assume that this was all due to the weather. I can't tell you how many times reports came across my desk where police ended up blaming rain or snow, yet more thorough independent investigations would reveal things like distracted driving, tire blowouts, mechanical defects, medical emergencies, other drivers that left the scene, etc. Hopefully this crash makes its way into the hands of professionals who can ensure nothing like that goes overlooked here.
