Celestino, Celia, Maria Reina, Child Killed in 5-Vehicle Crash on TX-19 in Hopkins County

Hopkins County, TX — December 4, 2022, Celestino, Celia, and Maria Reina and a 7-year-old boy died in a five-vehicle crash on State Highway 19 in Hopkins County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 5:45 p.m. along Highway 19 at County Road 4764. Preliminary investigation suggests 60-year-old Gerald Adams was northbound on the highway in a Ford F-650 van. A vehicle ahead of him swerved onto the shoulder to pass two Toyota Avalons, both of which were stopped and waiting to turn onto CR 4764.

Adams failed to reduce his speed and crashed into the rear Toyota, pushing it into the southbound lanes. The car then collided with two oncoming vehicles. The Ford van also continued forward and hit the front Toyota.

60-year-olds Celestino and Celia Reina, 32-year-old Maria Reina, and a juvenile boy were all in the Avalon pushed into the southbound lanes. All four died in the crash. Nine people from the other involved vehicles received non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at area hospitals. Adams was unhurt.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Five-Vehicle Accident on TX-19 in Hopkins County

Preliminary reports about this accident say the striking driver "failed to reduce speed," but it's not clear yet why not. Police are likely working on figuring that out, but in the meantime I have a feeling some folks may jump to their own conclusions about one kind of driver mistake or another.

Operator errors may cause all kinds of wrecks, statistically speaking, but they're far from the only explanations. All the potential contributing factors, from bad roads to brake failures to the vehicle that passed the Toyotas and may have blocked the striking driver's view, must be accounted for. Until a full and careful investigation is conducted it's important not to make up one's mind. I think most would agree that those who lost four loved ones in this terrible and complex accident deserve to know the whole and true story of how that happened. I just hope authorities took the time and care needed to get that for them.
