Commentary on Karlos Guillen, Julissa Gonzalez Accident in Nacogdoches
After a wreck like this I'm often concerned that authorities won't give it the proper attention it deserves. They and readers might assume the driver fell asleep at the wheel or was distracted by his phone and not give other possibilities--both common and unusual--due consideration. What if the truck had mechanical problems or defects? What about blown or worn-out tires? Did its cargo shift somehow in the trailer and unbalance it? Does the driver's employer force him to operate poorly-maintained equipment or to work dangerously long hours?
I'm not saying I know more than reports convey about what happened in Nacogdoches, but as with any crash it's best to look carefully at what happened and let the evidence speak for itself. It's possible more thorough investigations would show the wreck was far from ordinary and there are extenuating circumstances to address.
