Commentary on Michael Reyes Single-Vehicle Accident in Amarillo
If it's true that the vehicle was on the wrong side of the interstate, that will obviously set off some alarm bells in folks' heads. Usually, that's a sign alcohol was a factor in the crash. But as common as that is, drivers deserve some benefit of the doubt until the facts are clear.

For all we know, the driver was experiencing some kind of emergency, such as a medical episode. It's even possible this was just a simple mistake that was exacerbated by being unfamiliar with the area or there being a lack of signage to warn motorists they're going the wrong way. It may be worth looking into how often people get on the wrong side of the road in this area.
And if it does turn out alcohol was involved, it's important to consider that the driver may have been illegally over-served by a local bar that needs to be held responsible for contributing to the crash. The only thing I can say for sure is that a crash this serious is worth as thorough an investigation as possible, and that could mean ensuring there are independent accident reconstructions rather than just police investigations on their own.
