Nalaka Silva Kavirathna Killed in Train Accident in Inez, TX
Inez, TX -- November 4, 2022, Nalaka Silva Kavirathna was killed following an accident where a train struck her vehicle.
Investigators said that the incident happened at around midnight off the corner of FM 444 and Railroad Road.
45-year-old Nalaka Silva Kavirathna was said to be in a Nissan Versa. The Nissan was traveling along the road when it crossed a set of railroad tracks. Doing so, the car entered the path of a train, resulting in a collision.
Kavirathna sustained fatal injuries due to the collision. No one else appeared to be hurt. Police mentioned the victim had been at a bar earlier, but it's unclear at this time if that contributed to the crash.

People may see the apparent detail of the victim being at a prior to the incident and just assume all of this must have been drunk driving. I'm not going to make that conclusion without knowing all the facts. Now, it's obviously important investigators follow up on that, especially since it's possible said bar is actually liable for this tragedy if they illegally over-served the victim. But at the same time, train wrecks like this aren't always as simple as folks may think. Police don't often look into whether or not the signals worked, if signage was at the crossing, if lighting is poor, if the victim's vehicle had faulty brakes, if vegetation was blocking view of the tracks, etc. Likely or not, getting a family the answers they deserve means ensuring nothing important slips through the cracks.
