Cole Cooper Injured in Car Accident on South Duck Creek Rd in Montgomery County, TX

UPDATE (December 5, 2022): The victim of this accident has been identified as Cole Cooper.

Montgomery County, TX — November 25, 2022, an 18-year-old driver was critically injured when his vehicle crashed into a guardrail on South Duck Creek Road.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on northbound South Duck Creek. Preliminary investigation suggests the teen driver was headed north when they lost control, possibly due to wet roads, and slid sideways into a guardrail on a bridge. The impact caused the guardrail to deform; some of it fell into the creek but a portion punched through the Kia Sephia's passenger window and into its dashboard.

Firefighters carefully extricated the driver from the Kia, which was in danger of falling into the creek's deep waters below. The victim was then transported to a Conroe hospital in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation but the specific cause of the driver's loss of control is unclear. Investigators say the Kia's left-rear tire had little to no tread and roads were wet at the time.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Cole Cooper Accident on South Duck Creek Rd

Police aren't sure yet why the victim lost control. Reports suggest they're leaning heavily toward a bald tire losing its grip on a wet road as an explanation, but hopefully they aren't putting all their chips on that before properly investigating other possibilities. I'm not saying I know better than they do what happened out there, but if I've learned anything over decades of working on all kinds of accidents it's that only facts and evidence should ultimately tell the story. Preliminary reports are often mistaken for gospel truth when they're usually just "best guesses" based on a once-over at the scene.

As with just about any wreck, it's important to conduct careful and thorough investigation to get to the bottom of what sent that car into the guardrail (and whether the guardrail performed as it should have, since reports of it punching into the car are concerning). Until clear facts tell the story it's best not to jump to any conclusions.
