Commentary on Austin Pedestrian Accident on Hudson Bend Rd
It's not really clear what happened here yet, but considering the devastating damage done to a child I think most everyone would agree that a full investigation is in order. I hope police are hard at work figuring it out, but I admit to some misgivings about exactly how much they'll actually learn. That's not to knock their hard work, but in many cases waiting for their reports isn't the best option.
Between competing priorities, limited staff and resources, and only so many hours in the day, even the hardest-working and most dedicated officers sometimes rush through their investigations. They assemble a rough timeline of events, find out whether any laws were broken and charge people accordingly, then fill out their reports and move on. If they don't give an accident the careful attention it deserves, however, crucial details may slip through the cracks and their conclusions might be incomplete or even wrong.
Maybe that won't be an issue here and police will get to the bottom of things, but that child's parents deserve every clear answer they can get. If there's anything else to do besides bring them the truth, it would depend on what is discovered.
