Stephanie Stanford Injured in Single-Vehicle Accident on Jackson St in El Campo, TX

El Campo, TX — October 17, 2022, 31-year-old Stephanie Stanford was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on Jackson Street in Wharton County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 4:25 a.m. on East Jackson near Sam Bishkin Road. Preliminary investigation suggests Stanford was driving a Honda Civic west on the roadway, possibly at high speeds, when she lost control and veered into a bar ditch on the north roadside.

Stanford received serious injuries in the crash. Two children in the vehicle ages 7 and 8 sustained possible injuries.

Police noted a suspicion that impairment was a factor in the wreck and collected blood samples for testing.

No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Stephanie Stanford Accident in El Campo

Police think alcohol was a factor in this crash, though only clear evidence like blood test results could really say one way or the other. If they're right people may be ready to blame the driver for her choices that night, but they may not realize there could be more to the story.

Folks don't always consider that drunk drivers can be victims too. Someone else's illegal behavior may have brought them to the point where they couldn't control their vehicle, and in those cases Texas dram shop law may have something to say.

Under dram shop law licensed alcohol providers like bars, restaurants, or liquor stores may not serve or sell alcohol to obviously intoxicated customers. If they do and their customers cause or suffer injuries while impaired, they may be considered liable for the damage done. Not every DWI accident involves a dram shop violation, but the source of the drinks is an important detail to learn when alcohol may be largely responsible for someone's injuries.

Having said that, I should emphasize that impairment is only suspected here--not proven. It's important not to take alcohol for granted until a full investigation finds out if anything else played a significant part. Vehicle failures or defects, blown tires, bad visibility, road and weather conditions, the vehicle's speed, and many other specifics should be learned to ensure the truth is known, and in the meantime the driver deserves the benefit of the doubt the same as anyone else.
