Commentary on Fatal Semi-Truck Accident on I-80 near Grinnell
It's not often a report like this specifically mentions a "mechanical error" setting a deadly chain of events into motion. Quite frankly, investigations tend to reveal either that there was no mechanical issue and instead the driver made a mistake or that whatever issue occurred was the result of something avoidable like poor maintenance.
However, mechanical errors can sometimes be the result of manufacturing issues that a driver has no clue about and couldn't possibly avoid. Perhaps something like that happened here. If so, it may take far more thorough independent investigations to ensure that the victims and families involved get the evidence they need to seek a proper resolution. Whether or not authorities will have the evidence or tools to do this remains to be seen. Perhaps having independent investigators look into things as soon as possible would prove more fruitful.
