UPDATE (November 15, 2022): Sources have identified one of the victims of this accident as 26-year-old Maserati passenger Johnny Aguilar.

Houston, TX — November 13, 2022, two people died and two were injured in a hit-and-run crash on West Dallas Street in Houston.

Authorities say the incident happened around 3:00 a.m. near West Dallas and La Rue streets. Preliminary investigation suggests a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Maserati Ghibli may have been speeding on West Dallas, possibly racing one another, when the Jeep hit the Maserati's left side.

The impact sent the Maserati off the road, where it hit a pole and the patio and fence of a restaurant. The Jeep continued a short distance before hitting a utility pole. All its occupants fled the scene on foot after it came to a stop.

Two of the Maserati's passengers died at the scene. Another passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while the driver was transported in stable condition.

Commentary on Houston Hit-and-Run on West Dallas Street

It's always frustrating to see another hit-and-run in the news; whether or not the vehicles were racing, nobody should have run away. At least there's some silver lining here in that the Jeep was left behind. Police said it had paper dealer plates, which hopefully means there's a purchase record they can check at a local dealership. Tracing a vehicle's paper trail is often how hit-and-run offenders are found when they leave a vehicle behind.

Once they find the Jeep's driver it's important to learn precisely why they ran. Sometimes it's just a matter of panic in a stressful moment, but in many other cases it's learned they had something to hide. Warrants, suspended license, drugs on their person, drunk driving...learning exactly what compelled someone to leave is crucial to ensuring they face appropriate consequences. Hopefully diligence from investigators and cooperation from the community see a resolution to this soon.
