Commentary on Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident on Coney Island Ave

If reports have their facts straight it seems like a commercial truck hit a pedestrian at a light-controlled intersection with crosswalks, but folks from the New York area will tell you that crosswalks don't always protect people from some of the drivers there.

Pedestrian safety is a really big issue in the NYC area due to how much foot traffic there is at virtually any time of day or night. Unfortunately not every area properly accommodates both pedestrians and vehicles safely; in fact, after previous incidents along Coney Island Avenue reports have called it "notoriously deadly." So was the road's dangerous layout responsible for this accident, or did something else cause it? Did the victim not watch where they were going at the intersection, or did the truck driver somehow fail to see and avoid them? Moreover, why did the truck driver leave the scene afterward? Did they not notice they hit someone or did they really think they could outrun what happened in a marked FedEx truck?

Altogether it seems like there are many lingering questions to address about what happened here. The runaway driver must be located and questioned, and the specific reason the truck and the pedestrian made contact must be identified. Someone lost their life here and whoever's responsible for that should answer for it. Will the NYPD see the matter through, or should independent investigators get involved to see justice done?
