Commentary on Motorcycle Accident near 50th and Slide

Clearly there's no telling yet exactly what happened here, and I hope authorities are hard at work finding more information and putting the puzzle together. Until clear facts supported by evidence are available, it's important not to jump to any conclusions.

I mostly say that because I've often seen how quick folks can be to blame a motorcyclist for a crash. Riders often get a bad rap as reckless daredevils no matter how safe one might be. As a result, people (including some investigators) are too quick to assume one did something wrong before the whole story is known. I've seen cases where even police reports blamed a rider only for evidence to soon show something else entirely was to blame.

I'm not saying that will happen here, nor am I claiming to know who or what's to blame for the accident. I only mean that extenuating circumstances--bad road conditions like water or debris, poor visibility, a mechanical failure, possible impairment--could have contributed to what happened. Finding the whole truth is crucial, which is why I frequently suggest independent investigations instead of relying solely on police reports. It's always best to let only the facts tell the story; the victim deserves no less.
