Commentary on Horseheads Truck Accident off I-86

Folks have a tendency to quickly blame single-vehicle wrecks like this one on driver mistakes like distraction or speeding. They might not be so quick to point fingers if no signs of braking were found since that might mean the driver lost consciousness, but nothing can be taken for granted with so many missing facts. Other things out of the driver's hands could also have sent it off the road.

For example, vehicle problems and malfunctions--and the reasons for them--unfortunately get overlooked too often. Underinflated or bald tires, damaged or defective parts, or even unpredictable and catastrophic failures in the truck could have caused it to crash, and making sure those are considered is important. Unfortunately ground-level police investigators don't always have the time or training to make heads or tails of something as potentially-complex as a vehicle defect, so these issues often get missed as more attention is paid to possible human error.

Whatever caused this wreck, it's crucial that someone with the needed expertise takes a close look and gets real answers for the people who experienced a tragic loss. Will police efforts alone be enough to get them?
