Commentary on Trey Ross Single-Vehicle Accident in Port Lavaca

When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks like this, one of my main concerns is always whether or not it's getting the attention it deserves. People tend to just assume the driver did something wrong--even authorities. This is certainly possible, and in fact things like alcohol and fatigue are all too common. But without considering other possibilities, something important can slip through the cracks.

Mechanical issues, road hazards, other drivers who left the scene, tire defects, medical emergencies--likely or not, people need to understand there are all kinds of reasons a crash like this may happen. Jumping to conclusions only serves to further harm a family going through unimaginable hardship. That's why I generally ensure independent investigators look into deadly wrecks like this so nothing goes overlooked. Folks would do well to learn this lesson and exercise similar prudence until the facts are clear.
