Commentary on Zachary Vu Accident in Southlake

Police said the rider lost control for unknown reasons, but also mentioned they suspected he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Whether that's true or not isn't for me to say, and only blood test results might shed some light on it. In the meantime, I hope officers aren't so fixated on that possibility that they ignore others. Poor road conditions, malfunctions or defects in the bike, or even another vehicle cutting the victim off and then leaving the scene as he crashed are all potential factors here and each deserves consideration in the name of finding the whole truth.

Even if tests confirm alcohol was a factor, however, that's not necessarily the end of the story. Depending on where the victim obtained it and how much he was served, any business that knowingly sold him too much may be responsible for his injuries under Texas dram shop law.

I don't know more than reports provide here, and I'll be the first to say that preliminary reports are often full of unproven theories as much as facts. Alcohol seems like a possible factor, but it's not the only one and its use might have further implications as well. I can't help but wonder if law enforcement really plans to take the time and care needed to learn the full story. If not, maybe someone else should have another look.
