Commentary on Ricardo Chavez Corral Car Accident in El Paso

What stands out to me here is the victim was apparently the only one seriously hurt despite the other vehicle being smaller and the that car hitting the pickup in the tailgate area. If that information is true, why is there such a disparity in injuries? Could authorities be overlooking something important?

A concerning possibility with details like these is that something which was supposed to protect the driver failed to do so. Airbags, seatbelts, anti-lock braking, seatbacks, crumple zones--any one of these things failing to work as intended can have dire and even fatal consequences. Since that's not the sort of thing authorities tend to look into, there may need to be more thorough independent investigations here to ensure nothing unusual slipped through the cracks.
