Amarillo, TX -- October 16, 2022, Tauzgh Lopez was injured following an accident where an allegedly intoxicated driver hit the car he was in.

Due to the crash, Lopez was said to have incapacitating injuries. No other injuries were reported. Police believe the driver of the other vehicle was under the influence of alcohol at the time. This and other details are unconfirmed at this time.

Commentary on Tauzgh Lopez Alleged DWI Accident in Amarillo

I won't sit here and speculate these specific allegations, as serious as they are, without seeing more evidence. However, it's worth addressing the possibility the allegations are true due to how complex incidents involving alcohol can be for the victims and families. This is due to dram shop law. It can be of significant help to the victims, but it's far from a simple matter.

What is dram shop law? Put simply, dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Bars, liquor stores, restaurants, and even gas stations can find themselves on the hook for a serious accident if they prioritize sales over the safety of those around them.

As such, dram shop provides both a potential avenue to get people the help they need and a tool to hold negligent businesses accountable for putting the community at risk. Despite its importance, authorities very rarely look into dram shop on their own. That's why these situations are often best followed up by independent investigations that will be more thorough. Hopefully those steps were taken here so those involved stand the best chance of getting the help they deserve.
