Sashane Brown-Stenneth and Children Injured in South Daytona, FL Car Accident

South Daytona, FL — November 2, 2022, Sashane Brown-Stenneth and her children were injured, one fatally, when their car crashed into a canal in South Daytona.

Authorities say the incident happened around 7:35 p.m. at the intersection of Reed Canal Road and Sauls Street. Preliminary investigation and officer interviews with Brown-Stenneth suggest she and her children were headed west on Reed Canal when their car's right tire struck a raised curb. The impact sent the car off-course to the left; it then crashed through a guardrail and fell into a canal below.

Responders found the car approximately 3/4 submerged in the canal and jumped in to extract Brown-Stenneth and the children. Her 8-year-old son was pronounced dead at the scene; she and her 10-year-old daughter were transported to area hospitals in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Sashane Brown-Stenneth Accident in South Daytona

Reports about this accident say the car hit a curb and went out of control. I have no reason to question that and police said evidence at the scene substantiated the mother's story, but that still leaves the urgent questions of how and why the car hit the curb in the first place.

In case anyone thinks this is leading to pointing fingers at the driver, that's not the idea. While it's conceivable that the car simply drifted too close to the curb in a moment of distraction, there are other explanations to consider as well. For instance, if something was mechanically wrong or defective with the car then it might have shifted course all on its own. This wouldn't be the first incident where a vehicle's steering or brakes lock up at the worst possible moment and suffering follows.

Am I saying a vehicle failure was definitely at the root of this crash? Of course not. I read the same reports as anyone else, which means for now I'm stuck with the same "who knows" narrative they are. I just hope police will take this matter with the gravity it deserves and dig deep to find the true cause of a family's devastating loss. They deserve no less than the truth; anything beyond that would depend on what that truth is.
