Bicyclist Killed in Dump Truck Accident on Ringling Boulevard in Sarasota, FL

Sarasota, FL -- November 3, 2022, a bicyclist sustained fatal injuries due to an accident where they collided with a semi-truck on Ringling.

Authorities said that the incident happened at around 9:00 a.m. at the intersection of Ringling Boulevard and Pineapple Avenue.

It appears that a 55-year-old man was on a bicycle traveling northbound on Pineapple. At Ringling, the bicycle crashed with a westbound dump truck.

EMS took the bicyclist to a hospital with serious injuries. He later succumbed to those injuries. At this time, additional details are unavailable.

Just to be clear up front, I don't know more about this situation than what's available to the public. However, certain details raise serious red flags. Specifically, the most up to date images of this intersection I can find show that this intersection is a roundabout. The news says the bicyclist was northbound, and the dump truck was westbound. That seems to suggest that the truck would need to yield to northbound lanes getting onto the roundabout.

Now, the particulars of where the rider was, where the truck was, how fast the vehicles were going, and whether or not there are dedicated lanes someone encroached on can all come into play. But what little the news says has a serious implication that the truck may have turned onto the roundabout at a dangerous time, ultimately killing the victim. Is that true? Are authorities giving the accident the attention it deserves? Perhaps more thorough independent investigations could clear up exactly how this tragedy could have been avoided.
