Michael Moore Jr. Injured in Auto Accident on CR 3102 in Hill County, TX

Hill County, TX — October 5, 2022, 47-year-old Michael Moore Jr. was seriously injured in a car accident on County Road 3102 in Hill County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 11:55 a.m. on CR 3102 near County Line Road East. Preliminary investigation suggests a Dodge Ram pickup was headed south on the gravel roadway as Moore was northbound in a Toyota Prius.

According to police both drivers may have failed to give the other half the roadway and were on a collision course. The Dodge driver made a faulty evasive maneuver and swerved toward the Prius instead of away; Moore mirrored the pickup's direction and the two collided in the roadway.

Moore suffered serious injuries in the crash. The Dodge driver was reportedly unhurt.

Commentary on Michael Moore Jr. Accident in Hill County

Police noted that the pickup driver may have been distracted and the victim may have been under the influence when they crashed. I have no specific reason to doubt their findings, but as always it's important to investigate carefully and make sure all the variables are accounted for here. For instance, if the victim was actually impaired as suggested that could be more complicated than it seems.

People don't always know that Texas dram shop law holds alcohol vendors (bars, clubs, restaurants, stores, etc) that over-serve their customers accountable for any injuries those intoxicated customers cause or suffer while drunk. Continuing to serve an obviously intoxicated customer is illegal because it endangers that person and everyone else they might encounter--particularly if they drive--yet many businesses do it anyway. Dram shop law ensures they face consequences, and in many cases helps the victims of their recklessness with the long road to recovery.

Having said all that, I don't know that a negligent business was involved here. Not every DWI wreck starts with a dram violation, but the sources of the (alleged) alcohol's an important detail to work out in case a local watering hole needs a harsh lesson about getting its priorities straight.
