Commentary on Burkburnett Motorcycle Accident on TX-240

After reading the published details of this crash I have a feeling some people jumped straight to blaming it on the victim one way or another. Between general bias against motorcyclists, no other vehicles involved, and it happening at night there's a pretty strong chance folks are ready to blame the whole thing on the rider being distracted or intoxicated without waiting for all the facts.

They might stumble into the correct explanation, and if intoxication was a factor that could have further implications (and a possible way to help the rider recover) under Texas dram shop law, but all the possible explanations for what happened here deserve due consideration. Wet roads, vehicle malfunctions, medical emergencies, or something as simple as an ill-timed sneeze could all have sent that motorcycle off-course. Until investigators have a better picture of what happened out there, it's best not to judge or guess from the sidelines. All that energy is better focused on what can be done to help the victim in a tough time.
