Commentary on Auto Accident on Sibley Blvd in Dolton

If police are right and the victim lost control while speeding, there may be little else to say; however, over the years I've learned it's best to take first impressions from police with a grain or two of salt. In many cases there's more to the story, but sometimes that's not discovered until someone else takes a look.

That's not a dig at police, just recognition that competing priorities, limited staff and resources, and only so many hours in the day sometimes mean officers hurry through their investigations and reports. When they stick to a "by the book" approach and look no further, crucial details may slip through the cracks. That can be a huge problem for victims and families in search of answers and help.

Maybe that won't be an issue here, but I have some misgivings. The wording of early reports seems to point a pretty clear finger already, and this wouldn't be the first wreck I've seen where preliminary findings were taken as gospel truth without question. Considering the fatal harm done, anything short of the full story won't do. The victim's loved ones deserve to know no stone was left unturned.
