Six Injured in Crash with 18-Wheeler on Highway 45 in Cloquet, MN

Cloquet, MN — November 1, 2022, six people in an SUV were injured in a collision with a tractor-trailer on State Highway 45 in Cloquet.

Authorities say the incident happened Tuesday along Highway 45 near Interstate 45, close to Blaine Brothers towing service. Preliminary investigation suggests only that an SUV collided with a commercial 18-wheeler in the area, demolishing the SUV in the process. Images at the scene show the vehicle with major damage to its passenger side.

The SUV's six occupants were taken to local trauma centers for treatment of injuries ranging from moderate to life-threatening. The truck driver reportedly refused medical transport.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

There isn't a lot of clear information yet about how exactly this crash happened or what caused it, but considering the injuries involved a careful investigation is obviously in order. Many possible factors must still be considered, such as:

  • Operator errors like distraction, speeding, or failure to yield;
  • Problems or defects in the vehicles;
  • Road conditions and design;
  • Visibility and sightlines;
  • Inclement weather;
  • Any other traffic in the area; and
  • Whatever other variables might have influences or caused the crash.

Checking into all potential factors is always important when learning the whole story. Unfortunately police might not go that far, which is why after major accidents--particularly those involving commercial trucks--I often suggest a second look by independent experts. Sometimes they only confirm what police originally thought, but in many cases they uncover new details that change how a wreck is perceived and what should follow it. Whatever is learned, the victims deserve to know every effort was made to learn the whole story.
