Texarkana, AR — October 31, 2022, 25-year-old pedestrian Craig Collier was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler on Interstate 30 in Miller County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. along eastbound I-30 near mile marker .5. Commentary on Craig Collier Accident in Texarkana

Police reported that the victim of this accident entered the roadway ahead of the big rig, triggering the collision. I have no specific reason to doubt what they say happened, but that narrative is missing a lot of relevant details that might help shed some light on exactly why things went that way.

Some may be inclined to say that a pedestrian shouldn't be on a freeway and the damage done, while obviously tragic, relates mostly to the victim's decision to walk there. While that may be a contributing factor, it might also not be the only one. For instance: What is visibility like along that stretch of road? Are sightlines clear? Is it illuminated at night? How fast was the truck traveling? Were its headlights on? Was the driver awake, alert, and paying attention to his surroundings? Where did the pedestrian come from before stepping into the road, and where was he headed?

That's just a handful of the many details that still need clarification. The point isn't to overcomplicate things or accuse anyone of wrongdoing, just to make sure all the relevant details are clear and only the facts tell the story. The victim's loved ones deserve no less than the truth, which means knowing that careful investigation was conducted to find it. Will police make that effort here?
