Commentary on El Paso 3-Vehicle Accident on Global Reach

There isn't a lot of clear information yet about how exactly this crash happened or what caused it, but considering the injuries involved a careful investigation is obviously in order. Many possible factors must still be considered, such as:

  • Operator errors like distraction, speeding, or failure to yield;
  • Whether anyone was impaired (and what else that might imply);
  • Problems or defects in the vehicles;
  • Road conditions and design;
  • Visibility and sightlines;
  • Inclement weather; and
  • Any other traffic in the area, just to name a few.

Checking whether those issues or others played parts is always important when learning the whole story. Unfortunately police might not go that far, which is why after major accidents I often suggest a second look by independent experts. Sometimes they only confirm what police thought, but in many cases they uncover new details that change how a wreck is perceived. Whatever is learned, the victims deserve to know that no stone was left unturned.
