Commentary on Austin Accident at Menchaca and Parkside
Police don't seem to know quite what happened here yet, but obviously it's never good to learn a car hit someone. Hopefully authorities are hard at work getting more information, but frankly I have some misgivings about how much effort they'll put into that.
I don't mean to knock their hard work. I've just found that competing priorities, limited staff and resources, and only so many hours in the day sometimes force officers to rush through things. If they hurry through a "by the book" investigation, crucial details might slip through the cracks. I've seen cases where pedestrians were blamed for failing to yield the right-of-way, only for a second look to show other factors--like low visibility or distracted drivers--were heavily involved.
I think most would agree that the people affected by this incident deserve to know all effort was made to explain and understand it. Do police have what they need to ensure the whole story is found?
