Commentary on Austin Pedestrian Accident on I-35

It's much too early to say what happened here, but obviously it's never a good thing to learn a car hit someone. Exactly how and why that occurred must still be learned, so I hope police are hard at work figuring it out. Even though the collision was tragically fatal, though, I admit to some misgivings about exactly how much effort law enforcement will put into learning the whole story.

That's not to knock their hard work, but in many cases waiting for them to turn up some real answers isn't the best option. Between competing priorities, limited staff and resources, and only so much time in the day, officers must sometimes rush through their investigations. If they don't give an accident the attention it deserves, crucial details may slip through the cracks and their reports might be incomplete or even wrong. That can be a big problem for injured victims and grieving families after the fact.

Maybe that won't be an issue here and police will get to the bottom of things, but I think most would agree that the people affected by the crash deserve to know no stone was left unturned. If there's anything else to do besides bring them the truth, knowing that will depend on what the truth turns out to be.
