It's obviously concerning that police brought up alcohol as a suspected factor here. To be clear, I can't confirm that without seeing the evidence myself. But the possibility of alcohol can make things rather complex for victims and families. That's why steps should be taken to ensure folks know about dram shop law and how it could be an avenue through which to get the victims and families the help they need.

Two Injured in Pedicab Accident on East 2nd Street in Austin, TX

To put it simply, In Texas, dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Bars, liquor stores, restaurants, clubs--these businesses have rules to follow. Breaking those rules can get people killed, which is why our legislature recognized the need for a way to punish those negligent businesses just as authorities can taken steps to confront drunk drivers.

Like I said, it's unclear if all that would apply here. But while folks may simply put all of this on the authorities, it's important steps are taken to focus on the victims and how to get them the help they need. Dram shop is just one possibility, but it's one which requires careful consideration.
