Romulo Mascorro Injured in Rollover Crash on Kelley Rd in Refugio County, TX

Refugio County, TX — September 10, 2022, 31-year-old Romulo Mascorro was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on Kelley Road in Refugio County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. on Kelley near Airport Road. Preliminary investigation suggests Mascorro was driving a Chevy Tahoe east when he approached a curve in the road. Reports indicate the Tahoe ran off the curve's north side and entered a barrow ditch, then began to side-skid. It hit a fence and a utility pole, then overturned and rolled before coming to rest upright on a nearby property.

Mascorro suffered serious injuries in the wreck. A passenger in the vehicle received possible injuries.

Investigators suspected that alcohol consumption may have been a factor in the accident.

Commentary on Romulo Mascorro Accident in Refugio County

Police seem to think taking the curve at excessive speed and possibly alcohol's influence were big factors here. While I have no reason to dispute that, and impairment by alcohol might add some further wrinkles to a full investigation, there are a lot of reasons a vehicle might leave the road suddenly. It's important they all get the attention they deserve.

If police are already making noise about ways to blame the driver-slash-victim, perhaps someone else should step in and make sure any remaining dots also get connected--ideally sooner rather than later so no evidence has a chance to disappear. At the very least the victim deserves to know effort was made to find the whole story. Any steps beyond that would likely depend on what's found.
