27 Students, Driver Injured in GISD Bus Accident on I-45 near Galveston, TX

Galveston County, TX — October 22, 2022, 27 students and a driver were injured in a crash involving two school buses on Interstate 45 near Galveston.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:50 a.m. along I-45 near Emmett F. Lowry Expressway. Preliminary investigation suggests two Galveston ISD buses were traveling to a football game when they somehow became involved in a chain-reaction collision that may also have involved two GISD trucks.

Investigators say no one was seriously injured in the crash, but 27 Galveston Ball High School students and a bus driver were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on GISD Bus Accident on I-45 near Galveston

While there's still obviously more work to do to find out exactly how and why this crash occurred, at least there's some silver lining that reports say no one was seriously injured. However, I'd argue a) that can still mean a lot of different things and b) kids' bodies handle injuries differently as they're still growing and changing. Things adults would bounce back from may heal incorrectly if they don't get the right attention early, which can cause serious problems down the road--once it's too late to hold anyone accountable for causing the damage.

I'm not predicting doom and gloom in the Galveston crash, and I truly hope everyone escaped serious harm. I just think it's always best to investigate carefully and gather the needed facts on the off-chance that things take a turn. At worst those kids' parents would be over-prepared for nothing, and that's always preferable to the opposite.
