San Juan Teen Injured in Hit-and-run Accident off Nolana Avenue in McAllen, TX

McAllen, TX -- August 11, 2022, a San Juan teen was injured due to an accident where an allegedly drunk driver hit them along Nolana Ave.

Officials said that the accident happened just before 9:30 p.m. off the corner of Nolana Avenue and 6th Street.

It appears as though an 18-year-old San Juan teenager was in a security patrol vehicle in a parking lot outside of a business. While traveling through the parking lot, a pickup was leaving and hit the security vehicle. That pickup then left the scene.

The teenager sustained incapacitating injuries due to the crash. The pickup driver, unidentified at this time, was said to have been drinking and had just been escorted out of a nearby business. Right now, additional details are unavailable.

It's not clear if authorities ever located or arrested the driver involved here. I certainly hope they did or that putting these details into the public can help someone connect the dots. One other thing worth considering, however, is that the runaway driver may not be the only one who contributed to the victim's injuries.

Maps show that parking lot in which this occurred is apparently that of several businesses, many of which are bars and/or restaurants. Considering the police believe the driver had been drinking and was escorted out of a nearby establishment, could it be that said establishment is liable under dram shop law for over-serving that driver?

Put simply, dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. If someone gets too drunk and is thrown out of a bar, then they hurt or kill someone on their way out of the parking lot, there's a darn good chance the bar involved was being reckless and engaging in illegal behavior. As such, there are penalties they can face which can also get victims and families the help they need.

Maybe there will be other factors involved here, and of course the driver must be located before there can truly be justice. With that said, other possible contributing factors could still get proper attention in the meantime.
