Harlingen Man Killed in Truck Accident on I-35 in McLennan County, TX

McLennan County, TX -- September 26, 2022, a Harlingen man was killed after an accident where an 18-wheeler crashed along I-35.

Initial details indicated that the incident happened at around 1:10 a.m. along I-35 near Ross Road.

It appears that a previous crash occurred, leaving vehicles disabled along the right lane of southbound I-35. An approaching 18-wheeler apparently did not see the vehicles in time, crashing into them and causing an explosion.

Authorities said a 35-year-old Harlingen man was outside the wrecked vehicles at the time and sustained fatal injuries. No other injuries were reported. At this time, additional details are unavailable.

Commentary on Harlingen Man Truck Accident on I-35 in McLennan County

With vehicles disabled on a dark highway, this all may just be an unavoidable tragedy. But a key factor will be determining whether or not a reasonably prudent, attentive driver would have been able to see and avoid the collision. If so, then there may have been serious mistakes here someone should answer for.

A while back, for example, I handled a situation in which a semi hit a broken down car on the highway. The truck driver said the vehicle wasn't visible until the last second. Thanks to court orders, however, we were able to find video footage from the truck telling a different story.

The victim's vehicle was clearly visible down the road, but the truck driver failed to see it because he was watching TV shows on his tablet. Had there not been more thorough investigations, who knows if that ever would have come to light.

I'm not saying anything like that happened here, of course, but it's important to ensure the right people are looking into a crash this serious to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
