Commentary on Maria Rodriguez Accident in Hutchins

Reports say the striking driver in this accident was unable to slow down for the intersection, but I can't help but wonder if there's more to the story. For instance, people don't always realize how many times drivers are blamed for crashes where their vehicles simply wouldn't cooperate in the moment. Brakes fail or lock up, tires slide on wet or uneven surfaces, power steering gives out...those and many other issues hit vehicles all the time at the worst possible moments, yet police at the scene rarely have the insight (or the time, or the tools) to properly consider vehicle failures as possible factors.

Consider the GM ignition switch failures back in 2014 and the hundreds of drivers who were blamed for wrecks actually caused by their cars suddenly losing power in motion; how many other defects and malfunctions slipped under the radar that way?

All I'm saying is that it's often best for independent experts to have a second look in these crashes, even if the preliminary fact pattern seems straightforward. At worst, that extra level of scrutiny ensures no important details get overlooked or left out. The people affected by the crash deserve no less than the whole story.
