This is due to dram shop law. Basically, the law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Bars, liquor stores, restaurants, and even gas stations have these rules to follow. Having them take accountability for harm caused by their actions is an effective way to ensure they face consequences while also helping the victims and families. Were these possibilities ever considered here?
