State Trooper Injured in Big Rig Accident on US 45 in Effingham, IL

Effingham, IL -- October 18, 2022, a State Trooper was injured due to an accident where a tractor-trailer hit the officer along US Route 45.

Investigators reported that the incident happened at around 7:25 a.m. along US 45 near the I-57 exit. It appears an Illinois State Trooper was along the side of the highway conducting a traffic stop. While there, a passing big rig reportedly did not move over enough, hitting the trooper.

Reports say that the trooper had non-life-threatening injuries. No one else appeared to be hurt. Investigators say that the trooper's lights were on, and the truck driver has charges pending. Right now, additional details are unavailable.

Putting aside that there are laws in place to prevent this, one would assume that a reasonably prudent truck driver would be able to see and avoid a police vehicle with bright flashing lights. Failure to do so can be a big red flag that mistakes were made. But what were those mistakes, and does the blame really only lie with the truck driver?

Let me give an example from something I handled a while back. A truck driver was texting and driving when he caused a serious wreck. As open-and-shut as that seemed, we found that he'd been responding to his supervisor. That supervisor would constantly harass drivers all day, and if they didn't respond immediately, he'd get upset. Those drivers, then, had to choose between appeasing their boss and being a safe driver. It was just a matter of time before someone got hurt.

An inexperienced attorney looking at the above example may not have even gone far enough to find those serious issues. They'd think the initial details were good enough and move one. More experienced professionals know the importance of getting the full story. Getting people the help they need is important, but surely officers can appreciate the importance of ensuring similar accidents don't happen to others. That's why I can't help wondering if this incident is really getting the attention it deserves.
