Commentary on Shugart/Rios Accident in Montgomery County

Police think someone may have been drinking before the accident, but there's a lot of reasons a crash like this could happen. Unless the blood work authorities subpoenaed confirms their suspicions and shows objective evidence of intoxication, it's best not to jump to conclusions and instead consider all the other possible causes. Anything from bad roads to vehicle failures to even a badly-timed sneeze could have contributed to the Dodge going left of center, so nothing should be prematurely decided on just the few preliminary details in reports.

Even if evidence proves police right about alcohol, things may be a little more complex than they seem due to the possible applications of dram shop law. If a bar or other business over-served the suspected DWI driver, that business may be partly responsible for the damage both people suffered in the collision.

Altogether this accident like most deserves careful investigation and an open mind. It may be tempting to start pointing fingers as soon as alcohol gets mentioned, but to make sure the victims get the help they need first the whole truth, supported by evidence, must be learned. Will police take the time and care to do so?
