Commentary on Teyarra Teall Accident on Keyes Rd near Modesto
As tragic as this incident clearly is, police seem ready to write the matter off as an unfortunate matter of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They mention the darkness and "the reasonable expectation a pedestrian would not be in the roadway" as major factors in the collision, but is that really accounting for all the possible contributors?
Here's a for-instance: A reasonably prudent person driving in a dark area--so dark they can't see potential obstacles from a safe distance--might think to slow down and pay attention to be sure they know what's coming. It's a simple but effective way to ensure they don't accidentally hit anything due to not seeing it in time. Professional drivers are actually held to a higher standard of care than civilian drivers, so I can't help but wonder if the driver took the same precautions. Exactly how fast was the truck traveling on that dark stretch of road?
That's not an accusation, but it seems like an important question to answer during a full investigation. However, police statements sound like they've made up their minds that the pedestrian simply made an unfortunate and fatal mistake. If they don't plan to look closer, maybe someone else should. At the very least the victim's loved ones deserve the whole story; anything beyond that would depend on what that story turns out to be.
