One Injured in Rear-End Crash with Semi-Truck on I-94 in Jackson County, MI

Jackson County, MI — October 18, 2022, one person was hospitalized after a car and a semi-truck collided on Interstate 94 in Jackson County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 1:00 p.m. on westbound I-94 near a weigh station. Preliminary investigation suggests a semi-truck was headed west when the driver started to slow to enter the weigh scales. As it slowed a car approached from behind and rear-ended it; the car then ran into the north ditch.

The car's 40-year-old driver was extricated and then transported to a hospital with critical injuries. The truck driver was unhurt.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Truck Accident on I-94 in Jackson County

People tend to read about rear-end crashes like this one and almost immediately conclude the rear driver did something wrong to cause it. However, it's important to remember that everyone should get the benefit of the doubt as a wreck's specific facts are put together.

Rather than pointing fingers immediately and ignoring other potential factors, it's important to keep an open mind and ensure all the lingering questions have answers. For example: How far apart were the truck and the car when the truck started to slow down? Did the truck driver brake gradually or suddenly as they approached the weigh scales? Did the unit's brake lights work? Should a turn signal have been used? If so, was it? Was the car's driver awake, alert, and focused on the road? Did anything prevent them from slowing down or steering clear of the truck?

I don't ask those questions to complicate things or accuse anyone. I just firmly believe in the necessity of a full and thorough investigation. The law is nuanced enough to weigh all the factors that led to a crash, but that requires learning about them first. Will law enforcement be thorough enough to get the whole story, or should independent investigators step in to connect more dots?
