Commentary on Scott Adams Truck Accident in Ellendale

Typically with a fact pattern like this, folks may be quick to assume the victim did something wrong. While it's common for this sort of thing to happen due to things like speeding or distracted driving, it's always important to know the full story. Just because a vehicle is slowing to make a turn doesn't mean they did nothing wrong. Not only that, but there could be factors neither driver had any reasonable control over.

Did this happen due to a lack of lighting? Did the truck use its turn signal? Were there any mechanical issues? Did the victim's airbags and seatbelt function properly? Is there something about the road or driveway that unnecessarily endangers motorists? Has this area seen serious wrecks before? Did a medical condition contribute to the crash?

Likely or not, someone lost their life here. That should at least warrant steps to ensure his loved ones are getting the whole story. Unfortunately, waiting around for the authorities isn't often the way to see that happens. Below, I discuss more thoroughly why this kind of crash is typically better off in the hands of independent investigators. Are those steps being taken here?
