Commentary on Roberto Ramirez, Emil Karimov Accident near Richland

It's important to keep an open mind and investigate carefully after just about any crash because the details may not be as straightforward as they seem. Folks may think there's little else to say if one driver was supposedly driving on the wrong side of the road, but steps should always be taken to ensure all the facts are truly clear. If there's more to the story or the driver was on the wrong side of the road for reasons beyond his control, that's crucial to know to ensure he's not unfairly blamed.

However, I'm a little concerned because long experience has taught me that police are often tempted to simply go with an obvious and plausible explanation rather than taking the time to confirm it with clear evidence. That's not meant to insult their hard work, only to point out that they have a lot of competing priorities and can't always devote the care needed to learn the whole story. An incomplete or incorrect report from law enforcement can be a huge problem for crash victims and their loved ones after the fact, which is why I often recommend that independent experts take a second look.
