One Killed in Rear-End Crash with 18-Wheeler on I-93 in Bow, NH

Bow, NH — October 14, 2022, a man was fatally injured when his pickup truck rear-ended a tractor-trailer along Interstate 93 in Bow.

Authorities say the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. along I-93 south. Investigators released few preliminary details about the crash but say a pickup was traveling on the highway when it hit the back of an 18-wheeler's trailer under unknown circumstances.

The pickup driver was taken to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead a short time later. The big rig's drive was unhurt and cooperated with investigators.

No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Truck Accident on I-93 in Bow

Folks tend to see that someone hit the back of a truck and assume they did something wrong, like not watching the road or following too closely. While that's possible and investigators will probably consider it, things aren't always that simple. There are plenty of situations where someone rear-ends another vehicle due to circumstances out of their control.

Not long ago, for example, I looked into a crash where authorities said someone failed to slow down and rear-ended a big rig. However, our closer investigations found the 18-wheeler had just merged from the shoulder without turning its lights on, making it extremely hard to see in the late hours until the victim was too close to avoid it or stop. Bizarre as it was that law enforcement didn't account for that, the new information made it clear the victim wasn't really to blame.

I'm not saying the New Hampshire wreck is identical to that one--just that it's important to take preliminary reports with a grain of salt and keep an open mind until more facts are available. Hopefully police will take the time and care needed to learn exactly how this tragedy unfolded, but if not maybe someone else should step in to better connect the dots.
