Commentary on Jesse Patino Accident near Madill

One of the biggest hurdles I encounter in this line of work is the idea that a single-vehicle accident is easily explained. Folks tend to feel that if a driver lost control then they must have done something wrong, and fingers are often quickly (and many times unfairly) pointed at speeding, falling asleep, or getting distracted as probable causes.

It's not that those can or should be overlooked by investigators, but they can't be taken for granted either. There may be more to the story, so it's important to consider all the possibilities. What if the vehicle malfunctioned somehow or lost traction on a bad or wet patch of road? Could the driver have had a medical emergency that incapacitated him? Did someone else run him off the road and then leave the scene? Are investigators certain he didn't have a seatbelt on, or could the belt have just failed during the crash?

Likely or not, those issues and others also need consideration. Unfortunately police sometimes ignore them while looking for an easy solve, which is why it's important for victims and families to be aware of how complex a single-vehicle wreck can really be. Click below to learn more.
