Killeen, TX — October 9, 2022, 26-year-old Destiny Cruz Lopez died in an early-morning car accident on Fort Hood Road in Killeen.

Authorities say the incident happened shortly after 6:00 a.m. along the 5200 block of South Fort Hood Road. Cruz Lopez was entrapped after the collision and was freed by Killeen firefighters. She was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition and died a short time later. Commentary on Destiny Cruz Lopez Accident in Killeen

One of the biggest hurdles I encounter in this line of work is people seeing a standout detail in early reports and then reaching premature conclusions based on that detail. For instance, it seems one person was driving the wrong direction in the Killeen accident; I suspect many folks will take that and run in the direction of "drunk driving" without looking back.

It's true that intoxication is one of the leading reasons for people to travel the wrong direction on a roadway, and further investigation may conclude it's to blame here too. If so that may add further wrinkles due to Texas dram shop law, which says an alcohol provider might be responsible for the damage done in that crash. However, other possibilities like confusing signage or disorientation in the dark must also be accounted for.

Right now it's still really anyone's guess what happened out there--and guessing isn't something any of us should be doing. Instead it's best to keep an open mind, withhold judgment, and try to find the best ways to help the victim's loved ones in a time of terrible loss. They deserve any answers a careful investigation can give them; anything beyond that would depend on what those answers are.
